Psychotherapy and Counselling for Teens

Teens are faced with new experiences and situations as they move toward life as a young adult. Increasing responsibilities, privileges, and expectations can contribute to increased stress. Difficulty can arise academically, socially, emotionally, behaviourally, or at home with family. Teens who are looking for support often want a safe and private space to talk. Part of the counselling plan will be to decide what information will be shared with parents so that they can be part of the support team.

When should teens or parents consider therapy:

  • Strong or frequent anxiety, worries, or stress
  • Difficulty managing their emotions, such as anger or sadness
  • Behavioral challenges at school or home
  • Academic concerns or stress at school
  • Problems with social interactions or bullying concerns
  • Family challenges such as divorce or blended families
  • Grieving the loss of someone or something important to them
  • Experiencing or witnessing abuse or a traumatic event
  • Engaging in self-destructive or self-injurious behaviour
  • Participating in substance use behaviour
